Building Awareness and Knowledge in Infection Prevention

On March 13, 2024, the Clinical Pathology Study Program (Prodi PK) held a guest lecture titled “The Role of Clinical Pathology Specialists in Infection Prevention and Control.” This event was conducted online through the Zoom Meeting platform, facilitating the participation of all attendees enrolled in the Specialist Doctor of Clinical Pathology Education Program at the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Diponegoro.

The main speaker for this guest lecture was Dr. dr. Sotianingsih, Sp.PK., Subsp.P.I.(K), an experienced clinical pathology expert from the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Jambi. In her presentation, she highlighted the issue of Healthcare-associated Infections (HAIs), which are infections that occur not only within hospital settings but also in other healthcare facilities. HAIs are known to have serious consequences such as prolonged hospital stays, increased risk of mortality, and significant financial burdens on patients and their families.

Dr. dr. Sotianingsih emphasized the importance of the role of the Infection Prevention and Control Committee (IPC) in reducing the incidence of healthcare-associated infections. This committee aims to minimize the risk of infections for patients, healthcare workers, visitors, and the surrounding community, while considering cost-effectiveness aspects. Here, clinical pathology specialists are expected to play a central role, even as chairpersons of the IPC committee.

Following the presentation, a discussion and question-and-answer session moderated by dr. Dwi Retnoningrum, SpPK(K), a lecturer in the Clinical Pathology Study Program, took place. This discussion provided participants with the opportunity to ask questions, share perspectives, and delve deeper into the topics presented by the speaker.

The guest lecture concluded with a virtual group photo session, serving as a moment to celebrate collaboration and valuable learning experiences in efforts to enhance participants’ competence in the field of infectious diseases. The spirit to continue contributing to the management and prevention of infections in the healthcare sector is a message hoped to be carried by all participants after attending this event.
